07-21-2020: Alpha Pi Omega hits pause on honey processes
TULSA, Okla. — With COVID-19 cases continuing to increase across the country, Alpha Pi Omega's national board of directors has implemented a moratorium on new honey processes through January 2021.
In an open letter to the membership, Grand President Mardella Richardson stressed that the decision was not made hastily, but in the interest of health and safety of everyone involved.
"Universities are adopting a wide range of varying plans on how they will address campus life in the fall," she said. "We are guests on college campuses and want to make sure we are abiding by all applicable rules."
Chapters will still be able to conduct programming, including events open to interested women, if it is in compliance with university and local policies on small gatherings. However, until the moratorium is revisited in January, no new honey processes will be considered for any chapter.
While the moratorium is in place, the sorority will not take disciplinary action against any chapter for not having the minimum number of active members.
The moratorium does not apply to processes that started earlier this year but were halted due to COVID-19. Those four individual chapters will get to finish as public health conditions and university, municipal and state policies allow. Additionally, those chapters must remain in close, regular consultation with the Grand Dean of Honeycombs.
However, the moratorium does extend to expansion efforts, which were initially paused back in March. New and pre-existing interest groups are asked to remain in close contact with Grand Expansion Director Ashley Morris to determine a reasonable post-moratorium timeline.

07-17-2020: Robeson County residents earn national awards
TULSA, Oklahoma — As part of Alpha Pi Omega’s first virtual convention, two Lumbee women received national accolades.
Mariah Sampson Oxendine was named the sorority’s Professional PI of the Year, which is presented to the organization’s most outstanding post-undergraduate member. Oxendine was nominated for the award by another member and was selected based on a portfolio outlining her involvement in both her community and the sorority.
In addition to serving as an alumnae adviser for the sorority’s undergraduate chapter at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Oxendine actively works with several area churches to create workshops for married couples. The Maxton, North Carolina, resident is a member of the Beta Pi Chapter in Robeson County and a graduate of both UNCP and Liberty University.
“While a mother, business owner and wife, Mariah has still taken time to be an active and involved member of our sorority,” Grand Awards Committee chairwoman Francine Cummings said. “By serving as an adviser to her local undergraduate chapter and staying involved with her local professional chapter, she is using her professional training as a counselor to make the path wider and better. We are grateful for her dedication.”
Additionally, Danielle McLean was named Grand Keeper of the Year, which is presented to the sorority’s most outstanding board member and voted on by the other board members. McLean was the organization’s vice president for the last four years and oversaw the COVID-induced transition of the sorority’s national convention from an in-person event to an all-online affair.
A resident of Lumberton, North Carolina, McLean is a two-time graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
“Planning a national convention is challenging enough,” Cummings said. “That Danielle was able to do it in the middle of a pandemic and successfully make the transition from an in-person event to one that is entirely only is nothing short of incredible.”

07-16-2020: Duke sorority chapter earns two national awards & charter
TULSA, Oklahoma — Alpha Pi Omega sisters from Duke University came away from the sorority’s first virtual convention with two awards and a charter.
One of two sites to be unanimously approved for a charter Saturday, Alpha Pi Omega’s group at Duke University is now officially the sorority’s Nu Chapter.
“It is very meaningful to us to have a support system for Native women at our university where others understand our journeys and aspirations,” Nu Chapter President Kya Locklear said. “This sorority is a huge step in amplifying the Indigenous voice and presence on Duke’s campus. Our members have already benefited from this community and sisterhood in many ways, and we can’t wait to see the ways in which our chapter can grow in the future.”
The newly chartered chapter was also recognized for having the highest cumulative grade point average among the sorority’s undergraduate chapters.
“During a time of great uncertainty with schools closing at mid-semester due to COVID-19, our Duke sisters still maintained high academic marks,” Grand Awards Committee chairwoman Francine Cummings said. “We are very proud of their continued academic excellence, particularly in the midst of adversity.”
Additionally, Nu Chapter member earned one of the sorority’s national individual awards.
Scarlett Guy, an evolutionary anthropology junior from Cherokee, North Carolina, was named Honeycomb of the Year. The award is presented annually to the sorority’s top new member. A citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Guy was nominated by another member of the sorority due to her dedication, persistence and commitment.
“Scarlett’s nomination letter emphasized her dedication both to our honey process and academics,” Cummings said. “She has upheld our sorority’s values and far exceeded sisters’ expectations.”
07-15-2020: ASU Native sorority chapter earns four national awards
TULSA, Okla. — As part of Alpha Pi Omega’s first virtual national convention, Arizona State University sisters received four national awards Saturday.
For the first time in its history, Iota Chapter was named Undergraduate Chapter of the Year. In order to be considered for the award, chapters were asked to submit a portfolio covering five categories: academics, community service, campus involvement, outside recognition and a creative component.
Along with having two-thirds of its members qualify for the spring 2020 honor roll, the chapter logged more than 200 hours of community service prior to the outbreak of COVID-19.
For the second consecutive year, Iota Chapter also received the sorority’s Chapter Programming Event of the Year. The chapter received the award for its Indigenous Women Rising Art Show, which drew in almost 150 people during Native American Heritage Month.
Additionally, two additional members were recognized individually.
Tyler Miller was named Undergraduate PI of the Year, which is presented annually to the sorority’s top undergraduate member nationally. In order to be considered for the award, Miller was nominated by another sister and turned in a portfolio outlining her accomplishments in academia, community service, campus involvement and sorority involvement. The Tohono O'odham senior is the first Arizona State University sister to receive this honor.
Angel Nosie, a rising junior from Gilbert, Arizona, was recognized for having the highest grade point average among all undergraduate members nationwide. She a citizen of the San Carlos Apache Tribe.
“From volunteering at a local food back to maintaining a high GPA to hosting a fun and innovative art show, our sisters at ASU have truly excelled this year, both in and out of the classroom,” Grand Awards Committee chairwoman Francine Cummings said. “These women have worked hard once again this year and they are a shining example of our sorority’s values.”
07-11-2020: Congratulations to our newly chartered chapters!
TULSA, Okla. — As part of its annual national convention, Alpha Pi Omega Sorority formally chartered two new chapters Saturday.
The delegates voted unanimously to charter the Nu Chapter at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and the Xi Chapter at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.
“For my chapter to earn its full charter this year, it would mean that the work that we have put into the sorority and our various surrounding communities has paid off,” Xi Chapter President Kaitlin Srader said. “It is also very exciting as we would be able to host Grand Gathering 2021 in Suquamish, Washington, a charted chapter, this being one of the dreams of the WSU Victory Voices.”
In addition to chartering two new sites, the membership awarded provisional chapter status to a group of professional sisters in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and reinstated the Zeta Pi Chapter in the District of Columbia.
“The sisters at these four sites have worked very hard to earn their charters,” Grand Expansion Director Ashley Morris said. “I am so pleased to see their hard work pay off.”
05-31-2020: Alpha Pi Omega stands with black community
TULSA, Okla. — The sisters of Alpha Pi Omega remain staunchly opposed to racism in any form, whether it is individual, societal or institutional.
For centuries, Black and Indigenous histories in the United States have been intertwined. Both communities have a shared legacy of fighting for self-determination while dealing with the aftermath of colonization. Sometimes by choice and sometimes by chance, our communities have lived and loved together for generations.
Unfortunately, both communities are also statistically more likely to die at the hands of law enforcement than our neighbors. The recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd further highlight that grim, unacceptable reality.
We stand in solidarity with our black sisters, friends, family members and colleagues. We love you. We see you. We are with you.

03-16-2020: Alpha Pi Omega & COVID-19
TULSA, Okla. — With COVID-19 prompting universities nationwide to go nationwide to online-only instruction, Alpha Pi Omega is adjusting as well.
The March service hour requirements have been suspended. April hours and group project requirements will be reassessed on a case-by-case basis. Study hours are still expected from chapters if classes are conducted remotely.
Chapters currently conducting a honey process are asked to remain in constant contact with the sorority's national board, as well as their regional and alumnae advisers.
With respect to programming, Alpha Pi Omega defers to the most current campus, local and state guidelines. Even when it is not a global pandemic, we are guests on campus and will act accordingly.
Additionally, the Grand Expansion Committee will not consider any additional new expansion sites for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year. Sites previously approved for expansion or re-expansion will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as campuses re-open. Interest groups must remain in regular contact with Grand Expansion Director Ashley Morris about any new developments on their campus or in their community.
The sorority is also monitoring the situation for its potential impact on its national convention, currently scheduled for July 9-12 at Mystic Lake Event Center in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Should conditions warrant, the convention may be moved partially or wholly online closer to the event date.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — As part of its 25thanniversary celebration, Alpha Pi Omega recognized its top chapters and individual members Saturday night at the Carolina Inn.
The Theta Chapter at Northeastern (OK) State University was named the 2018-2019 Undergraduate Chapter of the Year. To be considered for the award, the chapter submitted a portfolio, highlighting its members’ campus involvement, individual awards and commitment to academics and community service. The chapter maintained a 3.34 grade point average while regularly hosting culturally relevant programming and monthly service projects during the school year.
One of Epsilon Chapter’s spring 2019 initiates, Onaleece Colegrove, was named Honeycomb of the Year, which is presented to the sorority’s most outstanding new member nationally. A citizen of the Hoopa Valley Tribe, Colegrove was nominated by fellow Dartmouth student Tia Yazzie.
Based out of Robeson County, North Carolina, the Beta Pi Chapter was named Professional Chapter of the Year, marking the first time the award has gone to a chapter outside of Oklahoma. The chapter was also named Philanthropists of the Year, for its fundraising efforts for several local causes, including a scholarship fund at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke for Native women.
For the third straight year, the Gamma Chapter at Oklahoma State University received the Busy Bees of the Year award, which is presented to the chapter that best demonstrates the sorority’s commitment to community service. In addition to helping at their university’s annual powwow and Remember the 10 run, Gamma Chapter members logged almost 400 hours of community service during the 2018-2019 school year.
For the third time in the last four years, the Iota Chapter at Arizona State University was recognized for having the Highest Chapter GPA. The six-member chapter has an average cumulative grade point average of 3.55 on a 4.0 scale. Iota Chapter was also honored with the sorority’s Top Programming Event of the Year award for its November 2018 Native fashion show.
Brooke Huggins, a citizen of the Lumbee Tribe and a psychology major at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke, was recognized for having the highest individual grade point average among the sorority’s active undergraduate members. The Red Springs, North Carolina, native has a 3.98 cumulative GPA.
An alumna of UNCP, Francine Cummings was named Grand Keeper of the Year as voted on by other members of the sorority's board of directors. A citizen of the Lumbee Tribe, Cummings was elected to the board of directors in 2015.

A selection committee chose Robinson after reviewing a portfolio outlining her involvement in the sorority, her campus and community. A May graduate of Haskell Indian Nations University, Robinson was the 2018-2019 president of the school’s student body and oversaw the sorority’s re-expansion efforts on her campus. Originally from the Denver area, Robinson is a citizen of the Osage Nation.
“Over the last year, our sisters and chapters have truly exemplified our sorority’s values,” Grand President Mardella Richardson said. “Whether that’s the demonstrated commitment to community service shown by Gamma, Theta and Beta Pi chapters, Iota Chapter’s excellence in the classroom or our individual sisters showing strong leadership, these Alpha Pi Omega women are continuing to provide exemplary support for Indigenous college women.”

07-16-2017: Native sorority announces 2016-2017 award winners
OKLAHOMA CITY — Two Oklahoma chapters picked up top honors as Alpha Pi Omega announced its national award winners Saturday night.
Gamma Chapter at Oklahoma State University was named the 2016-2017 Undergraduate Chapter of the Year. To be considered for the award, the chapter submitted a portfolio, highlighting its members’ campus involvement, individual awards and commitment to academics and community service.
With its members averaging more than five hours of community service per month each, the chapter also earned the Busy Bees of the Year award, given annually to the chapter that best demonstrates the sorority’s commitment to volunteering.
Gamma Chapter’s president, Marly Fixico-Hardison, was named Honeycomb of the Year, which is presented to the most outstanding new member nationally. A citizen of the Seminole Nation originally from Seminole, Oklahoma, Fixico-Hardison is majoring in chemical engineering with an option in biochemistry.
Based in the Oklahoma City metro area, the Theta Pi Chapter was named Professional Chapter of the Year. Along with having representatives on five national committees, the Theta Pi Chapter hosted the sorority’s 2017 national convention just two years after receiving its charter.
“The Theta Pi chapter is extremely honored to be selected as Professional Chapter of the Year,” Theta Pi President Rochell Werito said. “We are a small chapter, but have made our chapter goals a priority this year. We put in the work and achieved those goals. We hold ourselves at a high standard. With determination, support and creativity, we continue to build a solid chapter.”
A member from a third Oklahoma chapter was recognized as the sorority’s top member, as Choctaw Nation citizen Twauna Williams was named PI of the Year. A resident of Durant, Oklahoma, Williams is president of the Delta Pi Chapter, serves on the sorority’s national board and was named to the 2016 NextGen Under 30 Oklahoma list.
Several other chapters and individuals also earned awards Saturday night.
For the second time in three years, the Kappa Chapter at Oregon State University earned the sorority’s Chapter Programming of the Year award. In conjunction with Student Health Services’ Collegiate Recovery Community, Kappa Chapter co-hosted 50 students for an evening of bowling, pool and pizza in an effort to showcase and encourage substance-free socializing.
Elizabeth Davey, a business administration senior at Haskell Indian Nations University, was recognized for having the highest grades among the sorority’s active undergraduate members nationwide. A citizen of the Miami Nation from Drexel, Missouri, and a member of the school’s track and field team, Davey has a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
With half of its chapter on the Dean’s List each semester, the Iota Chapter at Arizona State University had the sorority’s highest cumulative chapter grade point average for the second consecutive year.
The sorority’s incoming national president, Mardella Sunshine Costanzo was named Grand Keeper of the Year. Presented to the most outstanding national officer, the award is voted on among the sorority’s board members. Costanzo is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Pembroke and a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.
The sorority also recognized Leota White as its Elder of the Year. A resident of White Eagle, Oklahoma, White is an active member of the Ponca Indian United Methodist Church and Ponca Tribe’s princess selection committee.
“I want to thank all the chapters who turned in awards, as well as individuals who sent in nominations,” Grand Awards Committee chairwoman Francine Cummings said. “Being able to praise others and show what our sisterhood is doing is one of the best parts of my job. I couldn’t be prouder to be the committee chair for such an outstanding organization.”

05-13-2017: Alpha Pi Omega announces additional fall 2017 expansion sites
TULSA, Okla. — Setting up its most ambitious semester to date, Alpha Pi Omega has finalized its fall 2017 expansion schedule.
As part of its regular May meeting, Alpha Pi Omega's board of directors unanimously approved expansion proposals for St. Gregory's University in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and, pending acceptance into the school's Multicultural Greek Council, Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
With Saturday's decision, the sorority's expansion committee is now set to conduct five processes this fall. In March, the board also unanimously approved expansion processes for Washington State University and Southeastern Oklahoma State University, plus a re-expansion process at North Carolina State University.
"This fall will be a very busy and challenging one for us," Grand Expansion Director Ashley Morris said. "However, these two additional sites are both close to already existing chapters, so the infrastructure is there to make it work while providing an opportunity for Native women at Duke and St. Gregory's to have access to a national support network."

03-12-2017: Alpha Pi Omega announces three fall 2017 expansion sites
TULSA, Okla. — The country's oldest and largest Native American sorority is state-bound come September.
As part of its regular March meeting Saturday morning, Alpha Pi Omega's board of directors approved fall 2017 expansion proposals for Washington State University and Southeastern Oklahoma State University, plus a re-expansion process for North Carolina State University.
"I am very excited about our opportunities for growth this coming fall," Grand Expansion Director Ashley Morris said. "Both WSU and Southeastern are natural fits for our sorority. Given the long history of success Eta Chapter has had at North Carolina State, the prospect of getting re-established in Raleigh is welcome news."
Located in Pullman, Washington, Washington State University is located on the ancestral lands of the Palus people and on lands ceded by the Nez Perce Tribe. In an effort to further foster dialogue, the university currently has a memorandum of understanding in place with 11 area tribes.
With its flagship campus in the capitol city of the Choctaw Nation, almost one-third of the student enrollment at Southeastern Oklahoma State University is Native American. A successful expansion process would make Alpha Pi Omega the first minority sorority at the Durant, Oklahoma, campus.
Declared inactive in September 2016, the Eta Chapter at North Carolina State University had the highest grade point average among all sororities on campus during the spring 2016 semester. Additionally, an Eta Chapter member had the highest individual GPA among all active Alpha Pi Omega undergraduates nationwide for four straight years.

09-01-2016: Founders' Day 2016 statement from the Grand President
Today we celebrate the foundation of Alpha Pi Omega, which was started 22 years ago by the visionary young women, Christina Strickland Theodorou, Jamie Goins, Shannon Brayboy and Amy Locklear Hertel on the campus of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
These four women, known as the Four Winds, started this sorority to foster scholarship, leadership, service and a sense of community for Native women in college. The growth of Alpha Pi Omega to include more than 700 sisters representing more than 100 tribes with chapters across the nation is a testament to the vision, mission and principles of the sorority.
The heart of our organization was and continues to be our commitment to respecting Native American traditions, supporting self-renewal through continuous education, honoring the creator through individual spirituality and addressing critical issues facing our Native communities and society at large.
Thank you to our founders for the courage to creating this path, to “Moon Woman” Alicia Hardin, who was a light to guide to our Four Winds, and to the Fifteen Warrior Women, who fought to ensure that the vision was carried into the future.
I am proud to serve this sorority as we continue to live our vision, mission, and values while being of service to our communities. As our sisterhood celebrates all of our accomplishments and honors our foundations, I encourage everyone to continue looking for ways to be better than we were yesterday.
ITCOS,
Grand President Symphony Oxendine
Victory Voices, Gamma Chapter

07-29-2016: Campus Buzz: An undergrad perspective from Grand Gathering 2016
Editor's note: This is the first in our "Campus Buzz" series, which features first person perspectives from some of our undergraduate sisters. Emmaline Mansfield, a citizen of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and a student at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke, represented Beta Chapter at our national convention this summer, less than six months after joining the sorority.
WASHINGTON — At Grand Gathering 2016 this July, I had the amazing opportunity to fill in for our Grand Public Relations Director to attempt to get feedback from sisters who had traveled from all across the country to attend this special gathering. I must say, those were pretty big shoes to fill! Never the less, I was in awe at the entire event!
Alpha Pi Chapter member Chelsea Kolander told me that attending Grand Gathering in Washington was historic. During the trip, I kept thinking about how our ancestors would travel to D.C. to advocate for our people and our survival. All of the historical and present trauma that our people have and do experience. Our resiliency and dedication to serving our communities. Our vision for the future, our dreams and the generations to come. As Native women, we are the lifegivers, the ones who ensure the survival of our communities.
Through the business meeting, I was struck by the intelligence, courage, dedication, and beauty of my many sisters. They were boldly speaking up on issues that they care about, supporting one another if at times it got to be too much and taking the time to truly examine all of the implications of policies that would affect current and future sorority sisters. Alpha Pi Omega women truly are phenomenal, and my sisters make me want to do more and be better every day.
Upon arrival Thursday evening, I had planned to stay with Alexis Benson and Kennedy Locklear. Naturally, there was trouble with our room. Immediately, sisters who already were there were willing to help us young college girls who had never checked into a hotel before on our own! On our way up the elevator to find one particular sister who had offered her help, we ran into about 10 Alpha Pi Omega women. There was a sudden relief from the stress as we received hug after hug and it was then I knew this weekend was going to be spectacular!
Throughout the entire evening we continuously ran into sisters, and it was absolutely perfect especially after a long day.
Lambda Chapter member Kelsey Harker elaborated on this a little better than I can: “My experience at Grand Gathering was absolutely phenomenal. I learned so much about other chapters and other sisters. To have conversations with other sisters is refreshing, humbling and makes you appreciate where you come from and where you are headed. Our futures, even though we try hard to direct them, are unpredictable and the Creator has plans for us. Each individual we meet is meant to provide an experience or a perspective other than our own. As sisters of Alpha Pi Omega, we all contribute these things but we all have one thing in common: the love and devotion to each other as developing Native women in society and as Native people as a whole.”
Friday morning was service project time! I failed in my Water Clan duties and overslept, which may be my biggest regret from Grand Gathering! Thankfully, Grand Vice President Carmel Paleski, gave me a recap of how well that went. She said the sorority’s delegates put together more than 200 sandwiches and 120 snack packs for the local homeless population at Friendship Place, which is affiliated with St. Luke’s Mission. think we can all applaud to that! Way to go sisters!
On Friday afternoon was the walking tour, which I also did not attend partially due to the fact that we were stuck in DC traffic -- yuck! Once we were back, the sisters going so graciously invited us to still join them and just catch up with them. However, I looked up at the sky and saw very grey clouds and thought it best to just go to a museum instead! Kappa Chapter delegate Isabel Arregiun said that getting caught in the rain on the walking tour was her absolute favorite part of her entire experience at Grand Gathering. Arreguin said as she looked around, none of the other sisters were prepared for the rainfall either. Only the tour guide had an umbrella but she could not help but laugh at how silly they all felt! I think Friday was a good day for all!
Saturday was finally the moment we – or at least I -- had all been waiting for. It was business meeting time!
The business meeting was exciting, heated at some points, intense and very passionate, but to recap the good and the bad together, it was beautiful to see so many empowered women building each other up.
“Grand Gathering 2016 provided the sorority with an opportunity to make decisions that would further the potential of our sisterhood to influence change within our communities,” Grand President Symphony Oxendine said. “I was impressed with the passion that was displayed as we engaged in our business meeting. The undergraduate members of the sorority spoke with confidence, eloquence, and exemplified that whether you are newly initiated or still in college you contribute to helping further the mission, vision, and values of the sorority.”
I had the pleasure of being one of those newly initiated and still in college sisters who had the opportunity to speak and present my opinions to the entire business meeting. It was wonderful and it was empowering. To stand and sit beside women I have looked up to for many years and also women I had never met, and feel included and be their equal. One thing I will confidently say is that many of those women during that business meeting truly served as a support for us college women in today’s society!
That evening was the awards banquet, which was lovely and so was our speaker Janie Hipp, who you should all do your research on. She is awesome!
Then sadly the weekend was over, but I can truly say that Grand Gathering 2016 has made a huge impact on my life and I hope I can attend many, many more to come!

07-11-2016: Alpha Pi Omega announces 2015-2016 national award winners
WASHINGTON — Alpha Pi Omega Sorority, Inc., announced its 2015-2016 national award winners Saturday night as part of its annual convention.
For the first time in sorority history, the Iota Chapter at Arizona State University was recognized for having the highest collective grade point average for the 2015-2016 school year.
Karli Moore, a spring 2016 graduate from North Carolina State University and a member of the Lumbee Tribe, had the highest individual grade point average among the sorority’s undergraduate members. A three-time recipient of the award, Moore completed her undergraduate career with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
The Beta Chapter at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke received two awards for a charity powderpuff football game it co-hosted this spring. With the game’s sizeable crowd generating almost $700 for a local family dealing with a neuroblastoma diagnosis, Beta sisters earned the Chapter Programming Event of the Year and Philanthropists of the Year.
The sorority’s newly chartered Mu Chapter at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, was named its 2016 Undergraduate Chapter of the Year. To be considered for the award, the chapter submitted a portfolio, highlighting its members’ campus involvement and commitment to academics and community service. Mu Chapter’s seven members averaged at least five hours of community service per month during the 2015-2016 academic year. All seven also earned spots on the dean’s honor roll for both the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters, with all three of the chapter’s seniors graduating either magna cum laude or summa cum laude.
For the seventh consecutive year, the Delta Pi Chapter in Payne County, Oklahoma, was named the Professional Chapter of the Year. Along with serving on more than a dozen national committees within the sorority, Delta Pi members volunteered with a host of local organizations, including Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma, Frontier Public Schools and Oklahoma State University’s Native American Student Association. The chapter was also named the sorority’s Busy Bees of the Year for their community service efforts.
One of Delta Pi’s members, Cherokee Nation citizen Lenzy Krehbiel-Burton, was named Grand Keeper of the Year. Presented to the most outstanding national officer, the award is voted on among the sorority’s board members.
The sorority’s other two individual awards both went to alumnae of UNC-Pembroke.
Carla Carter Jacobs, a 2004 graduate and member of the Coharie Tribe, was named Honeycomb of the Year, which is presented to the sorority’s top new member. A resident of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Jacobs joined the sorority in December as part of Alpha Pi Omega’s professional chapter in the Triangle area.
Valerie Jacobs Pedro, a 2007 graduate and a member of the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe, was named PI of the Year, which is presented to the sorority’s most outstanding member nationwide. Nominated by her sister, Dr. Meki Jacobs Graham, Pedro was selected by a committee after reviewing a portfolio outlining her involvement in both the sorority and her community.
“I am thankful for all those who nominated and turned in an award application,” Grand Awards Committee chairwoman Francine Cummings said. “It was a hard choice with some of the awards, which means that our sisters are doing great things in the name of Alpha Pi Omega. I want to encourage everyone to keep up the hard work and keep a record so next year we will have lots of applications to read.”
07-05-2016: Hipp named 2016 Elder of the Year
WASHINGTON — Alpha Pi Omega has tapped a member of Indian Country's agricultural community as its 2016 Lillian Rose Strickland Elder of the Year honoree.
A citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, Janie Simms Hipp is currently the director of the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative at the University of Arkansas’ School of Law. She will be recognized on July 9 at the sorority's national convention in Washington.
She has served as Senior Advisor for Tribal Relations to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Director of the Risk Management Education Division of USDA Risk Management Agency, and the National Program Leader for Risk Management Education at USDA. Hipp earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma, her J.D. from Oklahoma City University and her LL.M. in Agricultural Law from the University of Arkansas. She worked for many years within the University of Arkansas higher education system, serving as a staff attorney, Associate Director and Interim Director of the National Agricultural Law Center. She was the co-founder and served on the board of the Arkansas Women in Agriculture, received the “Spirit” of Women in Blue Jeans award from the South Dakota Women in Blue Jeans, and in 2012, received the Honorary America FFA Degree.
She is also the co-founder of the Intertribal Native Women and Youth in Agriculture organization and previously served as board member of the Arkansas American Indian Center.
Created at Grand Gathering 2013, the Lillian Rose Strickland Elder of the Year award is presented annually to a respected elder who has demonstrated a commitment to education, leadership, tribal culture and mentoring other Native women. Previous recipients include Haliwa-Saponi artist Senora Lynch and Comanche activist LaDonna Harris.
